Ayr is located about 40 miles south west of the City of Glasgow. A popular place for Scots to nip down to the coast and get a breath of fresh air, pardon the pun!. You can walk down the long sandy beaches on the esplanade or along the tree lined roads which can blow away the cobwebs. Ayr has a fantastic landscape and has inspired many a writer a poet, no other than the famous Robert burns who was born just outside the town in Alloway. If you are a fan of horse racing Ayr has a well know racecourse venue with frequent dates in the calendar.
Rich in history and architecture there are many local places to visit and keep your interest peaked. The main town was once known as St John's town of Ayr, beginning as a settlement that served the main castle, dating back to 1197. The river through the town had it's first bridge built around 800 years ago. The harbour dates right back also and was a very important hub the west coast of Scotland for a long time. It’s a shame that the castle built by William the 1, as it was totally grounded by Cromwell and his forces in 1654, which made way for the massive citadel he constructed here, and from which much of Scotland was governed at that time. All in all though Ayr is a beautiful town that that is a real pleasure to visit, stroll around the picturesque town with old buildings blended in with the new, a shoppers paradise indeed and place you will not forget.
